InsideSchools Review

Our review:

At Brooklyn Gardens Elementary School, staffers encourage children to investigate and explore. A sense of curiosity and a willingness to ask questions are seen as a plus.

The heart of the curriculum is social studies, science and the arts, with a special focus on gardening in a nearby park. Children engage in extended projects in which they plan, discuss, write, read, draw, and build, according to a press release. “Our students ask questions to better understand their world. Inquiry leads curious minds to investigate,” Principal Irene K. Spence said in a press release.

Spence is a native Brooklynite who taught at PS 97 for ten years, producing talent shows, plays, performances and art projects with her students. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the City College of New York and has a MA in special education.

BGES, opened in 2013, shares the building with School of the Future Brooklyn and PS/IS 174, which is phasing out due to poor performance.

Special education: There are team taught classes.
