The Downside
Overcrowding; some kids get lost in the shuffle
New Utrecht High School in Bensonhurst serves a wide-ranging population that includes high achievers in the honors track, new immigrants learning English and students with special needs. It is one of New York City's largest high schools. Students speak more than 30 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Urdu and Italian.
Most students graduate on time, and the number of graduates ready for college-level work is above the citywide average. Teachers say the school is safe and orderly, though numbers are rising and the school is crowded. Most teachers report they would recommend the school to other families, according to school surveys.
Perks of this big school include a football field and a swimming pool. Students may participate in a talent show, a fashion show, a spring musical and a Chinese New Year celebration. The school has more than 30 academic, social and cultural clubs. The foreign language choices are Italian, Mandarin and Spanish.
The well-kept building has a wood shop, two gyms and a swimming pool. A newer wing houses a cafeteria and classrooms. The school has a small business operation, where students learn the facets of operating an actual business and enter into competition with other schools.
Students with good standardized test scores and grades and attendance in middle school may apply to the Honors Academy, which has a focus on humanities, math and science.
The school also offers programs in Medical Billing and Coding, Travel and Tourism, and Law. Teens participate in internships and job shadowing at places like the Justice Resource Center and Maimonides Hospital. Another program offering is the Academy of Art and Design.
In a partnership with Kingsborough Community College, more than half of New Utrecht students take college-level courses by the time they graduate. The program helps kids stay focused on going to college, critical in a community where many parents may not have finished high school.
Despite the range of offerings at this large school, some kids get lost in the shuffle. More than half miss more than 18 days of school. Students have the same guidance counselor all four years, to develop positive relationships with staff and improve attendance, according to the yearly plan. The school is overcrowded and some kids complain about bullying, safety and respect among students.
College acceptances include New York University, SUNY Binghamton, Amherst College, Cornell, Fordham, Middlebury College, Niagara University and the University of Houston. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, April 2018)
