What’s Special

Daily advisory; free after-school program

The Downside

Limited electives, no music

Leadership and Public Service is a tiny high school that gives teens lots of social support and a taste of college and the working world. Founded in 1993 in partnership with Syracuse University, the school offers two programs: Leadership and Public Service, and Business and Entrepreneurship. Good opportunities exist in each for students aiming for college.

Students in the Business program may graduate with a two-year college degree in public administration, saving two years’ college tuition. About 16-17 students from each class complete this path.

In Public Service, students take courses in law and social justice. Up to a dozen rising seniors live on the Syracuse Campus in the summer, taking courses and living in the dorm. About 40 high-school students meet with college student mentors during the school year. They do community service projects together and attend college presentations.

Advanced students may take Advanced Placement (AP) calculus or AP statistics (it varies each year), AP Environmental Science and AP Computer Science Principles. The school does not offer physics. And in the arts, Leadership no longer offers music.

A web of social support is available, for example incoming 9th graders attend a one-week summer program, and all students meet in daily, small group advisories led by the same teacher all four years. Students who need counseling may work with a full-time social worker or an intern. Leadership became one of the first schools in the nation to implement a restorative justice program, in which students and teachers learn to address conflicts before they escalate.

Leadership has had ups and downs over the years but renewed attention on attendance, teacher training, tutoring, and small group work is having a positive impact, data and surveys show. The school also adopted the Writing Revolution, a method that has had success with a range of students because of its clear, step-by-step approach to writing.

Trinity Church Wall Street offers free after-school to any student. They meet in a building behind the church called the Commons, which has a full gymnasium and a basketball court, a teaching kitchen, and comfy seating.

Leadership staff tries to help students afford college. All teens fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); typically more than half receive tuition assistance to attend a New York State college. (Lydie Raschka, interview and web reports, April 2022)
