What’s Special

Project-based school for new immigrants learning English

The Downside

Limited clubs and activities

Manhattan International is a small high school that serves students who have been in the country for four years or less who are learning English. Founded in 1993, it opened in partnership with Internationals Network for Public Schools,  an organization with long experience preparing new immigrants for college, including those who have had little schooling in their home country. Native languages spoken here include Spanish, Mandarin, Wolof and Nepali among others.

Academics & Instruction: Students learn to speak, write and read in English in their regular classes. Because they arrive at the school with different educational backgrounds and degrees of English fluency, classes mix age groups. Ninth- and 10th-graders stay with the same teachers for two years to improve their language skills. Teens work in groups on projects and translate for one another.

The school is a member of the New York Performance Standards Consortium. Most high schools require students to take five Regents exams to graduate, but Consortium schools only require the NY State Regents ELA (English language arts) exam. Students present portfolios of their work to a panel of teachers, students and visitors to demonstrate what they have learned. These may take the form of an essay, research paper, and science and math projects.

In 11th grade, students participate in internships to acquaint them with the world of work and help them develop their English skills in a non-school setting. Students may take college classes through Hunter, John Jay, Borough of Manhattan Community College and Hostos Community College.

Students who struggle work one-on-one with a paraprofessional, in small groups, and during after school tutoring. A Saturday enrichment program is open to all students.

Themes and Programs: All students study computer science. The Software Engineering Program (SEP) covers programming, robotics, web and game design, 3D printing, and more. Students get hands-on experience through hackathons and work with industry leaders. Classrooms are equipped with AppleTV’s and Macbooks, and iPads. Students also study photography, video, animation and drama in partnerships with Magic Box Productions, Beam Center and MCC Theater.

Culture & Environment: Staff share strategies like mindfulness, conflict resolution and positive behavior strategies and students train to serve as mentors to their peers. Older students show younger one’s practical skills, such as how to use the city's transportation. The school regularly conducts workshops and training on topics such as unconscious bias, privilege and cultural competence.

Building & Facilities: The school is housed in the Julia Richman complex on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Students take field trips to nearby cultural landmarks and museums and Central Park. As a small school, there are fewer after-school offerings or clubs. Teens may join Julia Richman complex sports teams. The building is shared by three other small high schools and a District 75 program for children with special need, P226M, for teens ages 12-15 who have autism.

College & Career: Each senior is assigned a staff mentor to help with graduation portfolios and college readiness. The school aids students in college admissions and post-grad employment through application guidance, essay help and interview coaching. It offers resources for career exploration, paid internships, and networking. Alumni networks and industry ties boost prospects. (Lydie Raschka, Web reports and interview, October 2023)
