District 10

District 10 stretches from the hilly, leafy reaches of Riverdale and Wave Hill, with its huge houses and pristine apartment buildings overlooking the Hudson River, downhill to some of the city's most run-down and dilapidated neighborhoods in the central Bronx.

One of the most overcrowded districts in the city, District 10 is also the top-performing district in the Bronx with several unzoned elementary schools and the borough's two specialized high schools: Bronx Science and the High School of American Studies at Lehman College. The district also houses Montefiore Medical Center.

There are some excellent neighborhood schools, including PS 7, which has gifted classes, and Luisa Pineiro Fuentes School of Science and Discovery, which boasts an extra rich science curriculum.

AmPark Neighborhood School, known for its focus on the arts, the environment and social consciousness, may have space outside the neighborhood zone for children in grades K–5. The Institute for Environmental Learning, a K–8 school with an emphasis on math and science, is open to kindergartners by lottery, as is the popular Bronx New School.

There are a number of small high schools worth noting, including Marble Hill High School for International Studies, a screened school where more than 35 languages are spoken and all students are required to take three years of foreign language (Spanish, Italian, Japanese or Chinese). A hidden treasure, KAPPA International admits students with a wide range of skills and prepares them for some of the country's most selective colleges using the rigorous International Baccalaureate program.

District contacts

Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns. In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.
