District 12
District 12 is smack dab in the center of the Bronx, encompassing Crotona Park and the Bronx Zoo and the 250 acre New York Botanical Garden. There are mostly low-rise brick apartment buildings, and towers of public housing. Although the neighborhoods have lagged in economic growth and development compared to other neighborhoods in the borough, in recent years there has been a wave of development, with new housing and stores sprouting up every month. Bronx Little School is one of the smallest schools in the city, with around 150 students in grades K-5, and is open to any student living in the district.
District contacts
Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns.
In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.
