District 9
Home to Yankee Stadium, District 9 sits along the western edge of the South Bronx and includes Grand Concourse, Morrisania, and Tremont. While it has the highest number of public housing developments in the Bronx, the area has seen new housing and other improvements in recent years. Most students come from low-income households, many are learning English, and a significant number receive special education services.
Despite these challenges, about three-quarters of students graduate, and those who’ve progressed beyond the early stages of learning English graduate at especially high rates. Schools are showing steady academic gains, with many approaching or meeting state averages.
P.S. 170 (3K-2) offers dance, theater, swimming, and puppetry. Mount Eden Children’s Academy (Pre-K-5) features a dance studio, rooftop garden, swimming pool, and arts partnerships like Alvin Ailey. It shares a building with New Settlement (family services) and Comprehensive Model Project (6-12). The Young Women's Leadership (6-12) is an all-girls public school. Icahn Charter Schools (K-8) offer longer school days, smaller class sizes, and the Core Knowledge curriculum, emphasizing history, science, and the arts.
