District 17
District 17 encompasses Prospect Heights' expansive pre-war apartments that overlook the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Museum, and the majestic public library, as well as the Caribbean neighborhoods of East Flatbush and Crown Heights. Much of the neighborhood is divided among new immigrants, African Americans, and Orthodox Jews who generally send their children to private yeshivas. Schools in the district are not among the highest performing in the borough but there are several noteworthy options. The historic Erasmus Hall high school campus occupies a prominent corner on Flatbush Avenue and the district houses Medgar Evers College, which offers college classes to some nearby high schools.
District contacts
Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns.
In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.
