District 2
District 2 sprawls over most of Manhattan reaching 59th Street on the West Side, 97th on the East Side, and includes the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city: the Upper East Side, Tribeca, Gramercy Park, Soho, and the West Village. The district has some of the most sought-after schools, including a number of unique arts schools, such as Ballet Tech and Professional Performing Arts, which boasts many famous alumni, including Alicia Keys. Some District 2 schools are becoming overcrowded due to new building development. The area is rich in educational and cultural institutions, including Pace University, the New School University, New York University, and many of the Manhattan museums.
District contacts
Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns.
In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.
