District 6
District 6 once had very overcrowded schools, but enrollment has declined in recent years as the neighborhoods of northern Manhattan have gentrified. Many of the new immigrants who once sent their children to the local schools have been priced out of the area; the newcomers tend to have smaller families. Nonetheless, many of the schools continue to serve a largely Dominican population.
The district offers fairs for elementary and middle school choice in the fall.
District 6 includes northern Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. It is bordered by the Harlem River to the North and East and the Hudson River on the West. Its southern border is at 163rd Street.
