District 6
District 6 includes northern Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. It is bordered by the Harlem River to the North and East and the Hudson River on the West. Its southern border is at 163rd Street. The district is dense and overcrowded, with a predominance of immigrants, as well as newcomers who are reviving the middle-class housing stock. Some newly built schools relieve overcrowding, and the district is home to Mott Hall, a competitive middle school. Among the institutions in the area are New York-Columbia Presbyterian Hospital Center, the Kingsbridge Armory, Yeshiva University, and Fort Tryon Park, which houses The Cloisters.
District contacts
Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns.
In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.
