The Downside
Too soon to say
NY Harbor Middle School, formerly PS 676 Red Hook Neighborhood School, is transitioning into a middle school. Each year, one elementary grade will close, and neighborhood children will be rezoned to another elementary school. By 2027, the school will serve only grades 6-8.
The school offers a curriculum that includes STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) and humanities. In the STEAM program, students integrate science and math, while the humanities lessons combine English Language Arts with social studies. Students engage in “missions,” which are project-based learning experiences where they work in teams and with community partners to create a final project.
Many of these projects are closely tied to the Red Hook community. For example, one humanities mission, titled “Critical Problems and Design Solutions in Red Hook History,” focuses on local history, while a STEAM project, “Weather at Our Water’s Edge,” explores weather patterns in relation to Red Hook's waterfront location. Additionally, students study hydroponics and can choose to take Spanish or French.
The school website provides a full list of projects, along with information on extracurricular activities such as Tae Kwon Do, dance team, basketball, and theater.
Students also benefit from a school-based clinic in partnership with NYU Langone, which offers physicals, vaccinations, sick care, and more. Parents are encouraged to join the principal for weekly coffee meetings to stay connected with the school.
Outside, the school boasts a renovated playground with climbing equipment and a slide. The building also houses the Summit Academy Charter, a 6-12 school.
Admissions: Priority is given to District 15, with room for students in other districts. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and interview, November 2024)
