Our review
Challenge Prep opened in September 2010 with three classes each in kindergarten and first grade. The school is the brainchild of Reverend, Dr. Les Mullings, who also established The Rockaway Center for Community Development and Education Reform.
The school’s mission, stated on its website is to address “the causes and issues related to local poverty, the needs of English Language Learners and special needs students, including gifted and talented children.” Two teachers and assistant are assigned to every class; each classroom has a SmartBoard and laptop computers.
Students attend school from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. daily. The extended day allows for two hours of daily activities in art, music, dance and gym, according to information published by the school.
LaToiya Tolliver-Revell became the interim-acting school leader in October 2010. The school’s founding leader, Sonja Webber-Bey resigned in late September 2010. Webber-Bey had to “return to her former assignment with the NYC Depart of Education.” according to the school’s website.
