Our review

A neighborhood school serving mostly African-American and Puerto Rican children in the working class community of Co-op City, PS 178 has partnerships with the New York Botanic Garden and a music residency program that offers instruction in keyboards, recorders and chorus. The school has a suspension rate that's higher than average for New York City public schools. An inclusion program serves autistic children from District 75, the citywide district for special education. The principal refused our request to visit. This information is gathered from the Department of Education 2003-2004 school report card. (Clara Hemphill, April 2005)
