The InsideStats

Our review

A new school on the Upper East Side, PS 527 East Side School for Social Action, will live up to its name with schoolwide annual community projects, according to the school's website. Founding Principal Daniel McCormick told DNAinfo that the school will focus on global studies and, starting in kindergarten, everyone will learn a second language--Spanish. Students will also have weekly in-class chess lessons and art and music instruction, according to the school's site, and will be able to take advantage of the school's proximity to museum mile with lots of field trips.

McCormick comes to PS 527 after nearly a decade at the popular East Harlem school, Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars (a citywide G & T school), where he started as a 5th grade teacher and then worked as assistant principal for five years.

The school's website says children will only have physical education classes once a week. But, the website says, every day will start with physical activity in the classroom. There is recess every day, but twice a week recessl includes structured playtime for exercise.

The school opened in 2012 with about 50 kindergartners in two classes and will grow into a K-5, adding a grade each year.

PS 527 is a neighborhood school and expected to help ease the ever-growing demand for kindergarten seats in the area. The Education Department carved out a new zone for the elementary school, which includes families formerly assigned to PS 151 and PS 290, according to DNAinfo. Housed in the Our Lady of Good Counsel building, PS 527 shares the former Catholic school building with PS 51. The space arrangement is only temporary - PS 51 will move back to its Midtown home when nearby construction is complete. DNAinfo reports that DOE signed a lease for the building through 2027.

Special education: The school has a special education certified teacher, according to her bio on the PS 527 website.
