What’s Special

Positive culture and high expectations for students

The Downside

One of six schools that share a building

Bronx Collegiate Academy (BCA) is a small school with a welcoming culture and high expectations for students. The school encourages students to take college-level courses and supports them in pursuing college after graduation. Teachers say the school is well-run, and students say it is safe and supportive, according to the NYC School Survey.

BCA has made progress in supporting students' social and emotional growth, with fewer incidents and suspensions over the years. This is due to more engaging lessons, community events, and incentives, according to the school’s yearly plan. The Montefiore school health clinic offers mental health, dental and other physical health services.

The school offers a range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and students may also take courses at Monroe College.

New Settlement assists seniors with college applications, financial aid, and planning after graduation. They provide SAT prep for juniors, college trips, and a college readiness class. The school has multiple recent POSSE scholarship recipients, and Summer Search participants, a program that helps students from low-income backgrounds with mentorship and leadership opportunities.

Many students are learning English, and many have special needs. In addition to ICT (integrated co-teaching) classes, BCA offers an after-school program to support special education students. English language learners use CLARO, a program with personalized lessons and activities. For example, students may pair up to practice speaking and listening.

Founded in 2004 as Bronx Expeditionary Learning, the school changed its name to Bronx Collegiate Academy in 2011 to reflect a focus on preparing students for college. BCA is one of six small schools in the Taft Educational Campus. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, December 2024)
