What’s Special
Internship program with Goldman Sachs.
The Downside
Crumbling building, poor attendance.
Metropolitan Corporate Academy, founded with the help of Goldman Sachs investment bank, never achieved its promise and the Department of Education decided to close it for poor performance. No new students were admitted in 2011, but current students were permitted to stay until 2014 when the final class graduated. Khalil Gibran International Academy, a school designed to teach Arabic, moved into the building in 2012.
Goldman Sachs promised mentors and internships in its gleaming corporate headquarters in lower Manhattan. Unfortunately, most students didn't take part, and they saw only the cramped hallways and patched walls in the school's antiquated building, once used as a Civil War hospital. The small buildingl doesn't have a gym, a real cafeteria, an auditorium, or an actual library. School assemblies were held in a church across the street.
