Our review

Bronx River High School is patterned after Metropolitan High School and Metropolitan Soundview which offer a "laser-like college prep focus" for poor students from neighborhoods where low achievement is the norm, its founders say.

Principal Greg Fucheck, who worked in industry for 15 years before becoming a NYC Teaching Fellow, taught at Metropolitan High School for six years and was on the planning team for Metropolitan Soundview. This new school also offers a school day that is longer than the city's norm - from 8:15 am to 3:45 pm.

Students, most of whom come in performing below grade level, get double periods of literacy and of math daily. They are given extensive guidance on applying to college and taken on frequent visits to college campuses.

There is a "strong advisory program," Fucheck said in a telephone interview, with students assigned the same advisor for all four years. Freshmen have advisory class every day; upper classmen a few times a week.  Each student is required to do 20 hours of community service annually  as well as prepare a written research project every semester.

There is a bilingual program for Spanish-speaking students and peer-to-peer tutoring for all after school. Students wear polo shirts and sweaters with the school logo, dark pants and solid black shoes, sneakers or boots.

Bronx River High School shares the Lehman High School building with five other schools, including Lehman.

Admission: Limited unscreened. Priority to Bronx residents who attend an open house, fair or information session.(Pamela Wheaton, March 2013 interview & web report)
