The InsideStats

Our review

Schuylerville Prep offers a modern classical education that includes two years of Latin, a full four years of science and math, and an emphasis on speaking and debate in structured, student-led Socratic Seminars. Teacher-mentors (called Success Coaches), and an advisory program, will assist students with the steps and know-how to realize their dreams.

Head Master Roberto Ossorio [pictured in white shirt with founding team members at the 2013 high school fair] believes in the "tried and tested classical model." A dynamic personality with an impressive resume, Ossorio chatted easily with parents and students in both English and Spanish at the high school fair. Despite his love of the classics and uniforms, his work history shows a creative streak and a willingness to think outside the box.

Ossorio was valedictorian of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, where he also began his career as a social studies teacher. As an undergraduate he was awarded a President's Leadership Medal for his work in establishing the first culturally oriented dormitory in the SUNY system. At Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice (LGJ) he headed the social studies department, established a Lyricist Lounge for student musicians, coached sports and served as dean. He and his planning team drew from their shared experience at LGJ in shaping the school which opens in 2013.

The Schuylerville mission is grounded in the classical concept of the Trivium. This three-part educational model consists of Foundations, Logic and Debate, and Rhetoric or Applications. In Foundations, students will hone reading and writing skills. Logic and debate will include Socratic Seminars and argumentative writing. In the Rhetoric phase, students will apply their skills taking up real-world issues.

Topics may include lessons about Greek philosophers Pythagoras, Aristotle, Socrates or Plato. Students may read Ovid's Metamorphosis, a Latin narrative poem, and take trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see Ancient Roman and Greek Art. "Reading, writing and communication is the foundation to success," Ossorio said. "We'll set the kids up to learn and from there the sky's the limit."

Ossorio dreams of a Reading Room, with comfy seating and quiet nooks, as well as Dinner and a Date trips four times a year to see Broadway shows and other cultural events. Eventually he hopes to take students to Rome or Greece or other sites studied in history.

Schuylerville shares the Lehman High School building. All students may join campus-wide sports.

Uniform pants are black, navy blue or khaki, paired with a white button down collared shirt or polo shirt. Boys will add a red or blue tie. Teachers will visit incoming 9th grade students at home and there will be a 2-3 day summer orientation program.

Admissions: Limited Unscreened. Priority to Bronx students who attend an information session, fair or open house. (Lydie Raschka, interviews at the high school fair, April 2013)
