What’s Special

Engineering and swim instruction; on-site mental health services

The Downside

Safety and attendance are a work-in-progress

The Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering (AUPE) offers engineering courses, robotics, Saturday tutoring, and swimming classes with lifeguard training. The school has doubled its enrollment since 2019 and has improved academically over the years, with more students graduating on time ready for college-level work, including students with disabilities and English language learners.

Academics & Instruction: True to its name, the school requires all 9th and 10th grade students to take engineering and urban planning classes. Older students may apply for apprenticeships in tech, finance, and business. Those who need extra support come in on Saturday for tutoring. Students who want more challenge may graduate with college credits in partnership with SUNY Albany.

The school uses The Writing Revolution, a step-by-step approach to writing instruction that teachers in all subjects and grades use, which ensures consistency in how students develop their skills. The school works with Elevate Education, a program that gives students practical tips on note taking, memorization, exam prep, time management, stress management, and more. All students take African drumming.

Culture & Environment: Teachers and staff participate in workshops to study good racial justice practices. Like many other schools, more than half the students miss a month or more of school. To improve student attendance, staff text and call missing students’ homes twice a day. They assign mentors for students and all staff pitch in on attendance follow-up. While most students say they feel safe in school, some report bullying. There is a mental health clinic on site and a guidance team with two social workers and two guidance counselors.

Special Education & English as a New Language: The school has integrated co-teaching classes for students with disabilities. There are four English as a New Language instructors.

Building & Facilities: AUPE shares the Bushwick Educational Campus building with three schools. Facilities include athletic fields and an Olympic-size swimming pool. PSAL sports are campus-wide.

College & Career: The school partners with the Student Success Center, which provides college counseling for 11th- and 12-th graders.  It also works with One Goal, a program that trains teachers to offer college and career advice. Participants in a student leadership program work with their peers to ensure they apply to three or more colleges, file early for financial aid, and learn about community and career options.
