The Downside

Few advanced courses

A neighborhood middle school housed in an historic four-story building in Astoria, IS 10 is a safe and orderly school where parents are satisfied with the education their children receive, according to school surveys. Teachers uniformly recommend the school to prospective parents and praise the leadership of Clemente Lopes, who has been the principal since 2005.

Two organizations, Grow to Learn NYC and Seeds of Change, have developed a rooftop garden for students to learn about sustainability in the urban environment. The science lab has a hydroponic garden, and the school hosts STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) family nights. The school has a partnership with the nearby Museum of the Moving Image. The Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) leads workshops about bullying, sexual harassment, communication, and healthy relationships.

While the school offers Algebra 1 to eighth graders, there are few opportunities to receive accelerated instruction for high school credit. Most students, however, are ready for ninth grade and stay on track when they get to high school.

Admissions: IS 10 is a zoned middle school with a limited unscreened magnet program that accepts students from across District 30 and prioritizes those who sign in at an event. (Melanie Quiroz, DOE data and web reports, March 2019)
