What’s Special

Lot of arts and field trips; Chinese dual language program

The Downside

Below average attendance

At the School for Global Leaders, a small, safe middle school on the Lower East Side, students may take trips to museums, have classes in studio art, and perform in musical productions such as The Lion King, in addition to taking regular academic classes.

The school encourages students to help their community with twice-a-year projects that bring the entire school together for a week of public service.

Global Leaders has a tiny dual language program designed to make children fluent in both Chinese and English.

The school’s Twitter page shows trips to the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Arts as well as to Queens College and a roller skating rink.

A downside: the school’s attendance is below average.

Keri Ricks became principal in 2016, replacing Founding Principal Carry Chan, who went on to become superintendent for District 1. The school, opened in 2008, shares a building with Lower East Side Preparatory High School and Marta Valle High School. [photo by L. Raschka]

Admissions: District 1 choice. The dual language program is open to Manhattan students who speak Chinese. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, May 2019)
