Our review

KAPPA VII is part of the loosely-linked network of Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academies which strive to offer a rigorous academic program in a lengthened school day to students in disadvantaged neighborhoods. KAPPAs offer a Saturday program,  a summer orientation program and a strict dress code for teachers and students. But from its opening in 2007 KAPPA VII has struggled with low test scores, teacher turnover and under-enrollment.

Twice -- in 2011 and 2012 -- the school was on the list of 20 schools that the Education Department wanted to close. But, in February 2012, KAPPA VII was given a last minute reprieve, on the eve of a vote to close it down. The city said that Principal Lisa Reiter, who took the helm in 2011, had made positive changes that appeared likely to continue.

The reprieve came as a surprise to the community as  few parents lobbyed to keep it open, according to SchoolBook. In 2011, just 9 percent of students were reading at grade level and 19% were at grade level in math.

Students are given incentives and rewards for good behavior in a system called Kappa Loot. They receive points through for wearing their uniforms, behaving well in class, completing homework and coming to class prepared. The "loot" is exchanged for prizes. Despite the incentives, students and teachers give the school low marks for safety and discipline on the city's Learning Environment Surveys. In 2011, 92 percent of teachers surveyed said that students were frequently threatened and bullied; 47 percent of students agreed.

The small middle schools shares the IS 117 complex with two high schools and a District 75 program.

After School: The Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation provides homework help and tutoring as well as a sports and arts program after school, during vacations and during the school day. (Pamela Wheaton, web reports, February 2012)
