Our Insights

MS 224, also known as the Science School for Exploration and Study, has a poor record of academic performance, high levels of chronic absenteeism and an atmosphere of mistrust among teachers and administrators, according to surveys and city data. Both children and teachers complain that the school is disorderly.

Several teachers complained that Principal Patricia Catania, who is white, created a hostile work environment for African-American teachers, according to the New York Daily News. An English teacher said the principal reprimanded her for teaching about the Harlem Renaissance, the Daily News said.

In addition, the principal confiscated a poster created by a child of singer and civil rights activist Lena Horne, the Daily News said. Parents conducted a protest against the principal outside the school in 2018.

MS 224 shares a building with the Academy of Applied Mathematics and Technology and International Community High School.

Admissions:  District 7 choice. (May 2019)
