District 16
District 16 covers a large swath of Bedford-Stuyvesant, historically an African American neighborhood, and now home to many Caribbean and West African immigrants. Bed-Stuy includes a mix of large housing projects, busy commercial districts, and peaceful tree-lined streets. Families priced-out of other neighborhoods are buying brownstones and long-time residents see a shift in the neighborhood culture driven by these new residents. In the past, many district schools have struggled but families now have new options, as several charter schools have opened and failing schools have been closed and replaced by the Department of Education.
District contacts
Each district has a superintendent, and a family advocate who is charged with responding to parents' concerns.
In addition, parents in each district elect a Communty Education Council (CEC), an advisory panel, to represent them. CEC members have little formal power but some are effective advocates for parents.

Most questions about special education can be answered by your child's teacher or principal. If you are new to New York City or your child attends private or parochial school, contact the nearest Committee on Special Education for an evaluation.
