District 16

District 16 covers a large swath of Bedford-Stuyvesant, historically an African American neighborhood, and now home to many Caribbean and West African immigrants. Bed-Stuy includes a mix of large housing projects, busy commercial districts, and peaceful tree-lined streets. Families priced out of other neighborhoods are buying brownstones and long-time residents see a shift in the neighborhood culture driven by these new residents. In the past, many district schools have struggled but families now have new options, as several charter schools have opened and failing schools have been closed and replaced by the Department of Education.
