The elementary schools in the Bronx have been improving in recent years, but many still have a long way to go. Some Bronx parents still prefer to take their children to school in Manhattan. Here are some options for parents who are dissatisfied with their neighborhood schools but who want to stay in the Bronx.

This list includes regular public schools as well as charter schools. Remember not all charters are created equal: some are great and some are definitely not for everyone. Do your homework. Unlike some zoned schools, charter schools usually have open houses and tours.

Many Bronx parents wait until the last minute -- even until September -- to register for kindergarten. Be aware, that if you wait until then, you might be out of luck even at your zoned school. Historically the Bronx has had some of the most overcrowded schools and long waitlists.

Northeast Bronx

PS 83, a large neighborhood school in Morris Park, is a safe, academically strong school with a caring staff that sometimes has room for out-of-zone children from District 11.

PS 153 in Co-op City has a gifted program for children from across District 11, as well as extensive special education services.

Bronx Charter School for Excellence is a disciplined school in Parkchester that accepts children by lottery, with preference for children in District 11.

Riverdale and Fordham

Children call teachers by their first names at The Bronx New School, a warm and welcoming school open to children from across District 10.

PS 24 in Riverdale houses the district-wide gifted program for District 10.

Throg’s Neck and Soundview

PS 100 in Soundview is a well-regarded District 8 schools that sometimes has room for out-of-zone children.

PS 119 only takes zoned children, but if you live in the zone don’t look further.

Girls Preparatory Charter School accepts children by lottery and gives preference to children in District 8.

Bronx Charter School for the Arts in Hunts Point is a cheery and welcoming place, despite its location surrounded by warehouses. Priority goes to children in District 8.

Grand Concourse

Grand Concourse Charter School is a good option for District 9 parents

South Bronx

PS 1 and PS 277 in District 7 have kind teachers and a warm atmosphere, although test scores have a way to go. PS 25 offers dual language instruction in Spanish and English. Bronx Charter School for Children has a nice tone. Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter is another District 7 option.
