March 26 Update -- The earliest a school can set its application deadline is April 1. Many schools, because of next week's vacation, set a later deadline. These dates can be found in the DOE's Charter School Directory.

March 23 -- In years past, students applying to charter schools were required to fill out a different application for each school they hoped to attend -- a system that drew confusion and frustration from some New York City parents. This year, the Department of Education is providing a common application that it hopes will simplify this process.

The application -- available in nine languages on the DOE's website -- allows families to fill out one form to deliver to each prospective school.

DOE Press Deputy Jack Zarin-Rosenfield explained to GothamSchools that the DOE's “intention is to make the process accessible to those who might get deterred by the six page applications.”

Charter applications must be delivered -- or mailed -- to schools by April 1. Some schools allow students to apply online. If a school receives more applications than it can accommodate, a lottery is held. Most schools conduct lotteries during the second week of April.

Thirty-one new charter schools will open this fall, adding to the 99 charters already established in New York City. Some of the new schools still have no confirmed address; some locations are being hotly contested by host schools.Find a list of new schools after the jump.
