Last SaturdayClass Size Matters held a Citywide Parent Conference at Manhattan'sSchool of the Future. Local officials, educators, and families gathered to discuss school governance, parent involvement, overcrowding and other issues relating to the New York City public school system.

An afternoon panel was held on "Bridging Differences between Charter School Parents." The panel consisted of Mona Davids of the New York Charter Parents Association; Leslie-Ann Byfield, an Achievement First parent; Khem Irby of the District 13 Community Education Council (CEC); and Dianne Johnson of the District 5 CEC.

The group discussed principles shared by all New York City parents, as outlined in a formal Framework for Consensus, released at the event. The document urges parents to recognize that the roots of a good education, regardless of the venue, are small class sizes, experienced teachers, adequate facilities, and a balanced curriculum.

Class Size Matters hopes to have video from the conference up soon. In the meantime, you can view presentations and press materials from the event here.
