DOE lists top ten most sought-after high schools
Which high school out of the 400-plus in the city received the most applicants this year? Tiny Baruch College High School, with only 438 students, received 7,606 applications for about 104 seats. That's up from the 4664 applicants it got last year.
Baruch is a selective school, which boasts a 100% graduation rate, a factor that the Department of Education believes influenced applicants particularly this year because the 2011 high school directory for the first time listed the schools' graduation rate. (Insideschools lists the most recent graduation rate on all our school profiles).
There were more small schools on the top ten list than large neighborhood schools which have historically garnered the most applications.
Numbers two, three, and four on the list were Manhattan schools: Eleanor Roosevelt, a selective school on the Upper East Side received 6,173 applications for 125 seats and Pace High School, which does not screen its applicants, received 5,883 for 108 seats.Beacon High School, a school of nearly 1200 students on the Upper West Side, received 5705 applications for about 300 slots.
Two other small Manhattan schools were on the list: Millennium High School, a downtown school, (#6) and Manhattan/Hunter College Science High School, which is housed in the Martin Luther King Jr. building (#8).
Townsend Harris, a perennially popular school for high-achievers in Queens with a 100% graduation rate, received 5,151 applications. Murrow (#5), Forest Hills, a huge zoned school (#9), received 4,755 applications, and the medical science program at Midwood (#10), received 4,681.
Note: The list released today by the DOE includes the number of applicants which listed the schools somewhere on their list of 12 on the application -- it doesn't indicate how many students ranked the schools first.
And it doesn't include the specialized high schools, such as Stuyvesant, or Brooklyn Tech which last year were listed as a choice by more than 20,000 students on their applications.
Here's thelist of top 10 programs which received the most applications in the main round. We'll post more information as we get it.
