The Basics

Who?
- NYC children born in 2022 can apply for 3-K and those born in 2021 can apply for Pre-K, for school starting in September 2025.

When?
- Apply between January 15 and February 28, 2025.
- Offers arrive May 13, 2025 (Pre-K) and May 20, 2025 (3-K).

How does it work?
- Apply online at MySchools. You may also call 718-935-2009 or visit a Family Welcome Center.
- Your child’s offer depends on the programs you list, seat availability, a random number, and factors that determine who gets priority.

Who gets priority?
- Check MySchools for details.
- Children get priority at their zoned school, based on address.
- Children with siblings in the program.
- For pre-K, children in the same program’s 3-K.
- Children in the district.

Types of 3-K and Pre-K Settings

NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs)
- Community-based programs partnered with NYC Public Schools.
- Often offer Extended Day/Year or Head Start for eligible families.
- Flexible, with family-friendly options. Learn more about its benefits here.

Public elementary schools
- NYC has 32 districts—all but three have geographically zoned schools.
- Many offer Pre-K and give zoned children priority for admission.

Pre-K Centers
- Sole focus is on young children.

Family Child Care (FCC) Providers (3-K Only)
- Small, home-based settings with licensed childcare providers.
- Many offer Extended Day/Year for eligible families.

Charter Schools (Pre-K Only)
- You can find charter Pre-K programs in MySchools, but they have separate admissions—contact the schools directly.
- Charters give priority to children living in the district. Visit our Charter School page and NYC Charter School Center.

Keep in mind when applying to 3-K or Pre-K
- You can apply to programs outside your zone or district.
- Living in a district gives priority for district programs.
- List programs in your true order of preference.
- Review each program's priorities in MySchools.
- Tour if you possibly can. Check websites, Instagram, Facebook for photos.
