G+T debacle: Half the kids -- and less diverse
On theTimes website nowand in tomorrow's paper, read Elissa Gootman's analysis of gifted and talented enrollment for 2008-2009 -- and weep. With half as many students enrolled in G+T programs -- despite nearly three times as many applicants -- diversity plummeted, schools that had g+t programs were forced to close them, and kids in underserved, outer-borough communities fared worst of all.
