High School Hustle: Is June a lost month?
It’s all so confusing. About two weeks ago, my son, a high school freshman, announced he needed to bring in food for an end of the year party, marking the last day of school. Since I had months ago marked on my calendar the date of June 28, I wondered: How could school be over already?
The party took place as scheduled, though, and for a while it appeared classes were indeed over. Regents Week meant showing up only for the exams, so when it was all over last Friday my son and his friends began making plans for a week of “Saturdays.’’
I couldn’t help but think of all the things he could be doing if I had known he didn’t have any more school (like a paying job, perhaps?) although it was hard to begrudge a little fun after so much hard work. The minute he stopped going to school, however, my middle school son began to resent waking up early and spending so much time on homework.
"Why isn't it summer yet for me?'' he asked, between what has felt like endless half days and days off for teacher professional development.<!--more-->
Other parents said they were sorry they hadn’t started their kids in summer camp earlier, or planned a June vacation.
But then again, the school year really isn’t over for high school students. For some reason, there are classes again – or something – on Friday, although it’s not exactly clear what is supposed to happen on that day.
And then there is the last day of school, still scheduled for next Monday, the 28th, but it’s a half day simply to get report cards that can be otherwise mailed. "No one is going,'' my older son assured me.
Insideschools is curious about how well your child’s school communicated the final days of the school year. Is anyone else confused? Are parents keeping their kids home next Monday? Take our poll and let us know!
