High school update: Appeal decisions in early July
Anxious 8th-graders who are still uncertain where they will be attending high school next fall because theyappealed their high school matches will have to wait a bit longer. The Department of Education said that final decisions for appeals would not be ready by the end of the school year (June 28), but will be available and mailed to students' homes in early July.
The DOE posted this statement on their website
_ Appeals Update as of June 17, 2010
Results of high school appeals will be mailed directly to students' homes in early July. If you submitted an appeal form, please check with your guidance counselor to make sure that your mailing address on file is accurate._
We asked the DOE how many of the 80,412 8th-graders who applied to high school this year appealed their placements received during either the main or supplementary rounds of high school admissions, and will post the information when we get it. Appeal forms were due on June 1; in past years results have been distributed to students before school lets out.
Schools lacking applicants
In a complicated year for high school admissions, where midway through the applications season ajudge ruled that 19 high schools slated for closure because of poor performance must remain open, news comes that several of those schools may not have enough students to field a freshman class. GothamsSchools reported yesterday that Jamaica High School only had 23 incoming 9th-graders; today the New York Post reports low enrollment at two other Queens schools: only eight students signed on for Business, Computer Applications and Entrepreneurship and Beach Channel High School has 21 students currently enrolled for 9th grade, far fewer than the number needed to open a class.
Middle school appeals (updated June 22)
Middle school appeal notifications will be "distributed to elementary schools electronically and to families by US Postal Service" between June 26-28, according to a memo sent to principals last week.
