Last week the Department of Education announced that of the 80,412 8th graders applying to high school, 82%  92% of them --- 73,718 -- were matched to a high school.

Not included in the announcement was the number of 9th graders who were matched to a new high school. Of the approximately 86,000 9th graders in the  system, only 5,518  (6 %) applied for a different high school. Of those, 3,120 (56%) received a match in the main round. There was no breakdown on how many were accepted at their top choices.

While all of the city's 8th graders must fill out a high school application, only 9th graders who wish to change high schools apply again for 10th grade. Not every high school accepts incoming 10th graders but because high school transfers are so hard to come by (usually only granted for reasons of health, safety, or travel distance), the DOE advises 9th graders who want to switch schools that their best shot of making a change is to apply again for 10th grade.

This year some 2,398 9th graders still hoping to enter a different high school next fall must fill out a new application (as do the 6,694 unmatched 8th graders) choosing from a list of schools that still have openings.  But while all 8th graders are guaranteed a match in this round, 9th graders are not. Those who are not accepted will remain in their current school, according to the DOE's enrollment office. And those who get matched to a new school but prefer to remain in their current school may do so.

Supplementary round applications are due today, April 29.
