Kindergarten letters in the mail; many on waitlists
UPDATE 3/24: Some 2,000 incoming kindergartners are on waitlists for public school next year. There are 112 schools with waitlists, some in every borough. The longest list belongs to PS 87, on the Upper West Side, with 125 students. Check out the list of schools on GothamSchools.
On Monday, March 22, elementary schools all over the city mailed out offer letters to prospective kindergartners entering school in September 2010. No word yet as to how many kindergarten applicants there were, or how many schools had to waitlist applicants due to lack of space.
Earlier this month, we reported that several schools already had long waitlists and wondered if there would be enough room for all zoned students, especially at popular, overcrowded schools. PS 290, on the Upper East Side, for example, reports that they had to send waitlist letters to 101 families [according to the DOE's list, there are 01 students on the waitlist].
Many students who are placed on a waitlist will eventually be accommodated, as other students choose to attend private schools, or gifted and talented programs. Many new elementary schools are opening all over the city to alleviate overcrowding, and all children turning five in 2010 are guaranteed a spot in kindergarten.
Actual kindergarten registration takes place in the schools from April 12-23. Have you gotten your kindergarten letter yet?
