Although the first day of school is just two weeks away, some students, especially those new to the city, still don't know where they will be going to school on Sept. 9.

Beginning next Monday, Aug. 31, the Department of Education will open special enrollment centers for high school students who are new to New York City, new to public school, or who otherwise don't have a high school placement. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Monday to Friday from Aug. 31- Sept. 18 (closed on Labor Day). <!--more-->

There are registration sites in every borough, all of them located in school buildings.  In the Bronx, you may register at Theodore Roosevelt orPS/IS 194; in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts, Clara Barton High School, IS 223, orBrooklyn Tech; in Manhattan at theAmerican Sign Language school, the  George Washington complext, or the Joan of Arc building;  in Queens, go to Thomas Edison or Long Island City high schools; and in Staten Island the registration center is atPetrides.

Elementary and middle school centers should register at their zoned school, beginning on the first day of classes, Sept. 9. Those students who don't have a zoned school -- and many districts through New York do not have zoned middle schools - should go to one of the enrollment centers. Elementary and middle school students with special needs who attend a charter or private school should go to a Committee on Special Education location to register.

Make sure you have the proper documents to register -- check the DOE's website for what you need to bring -- and don't forget to bring  your child!  If you are looking for  a high school, check out this week's  Ask Judy column for advice.  If you are new to New York City and its school system, check out our New to NYC schools? section.
