Poll results: Mixed feelings about charter schools
Charter schools continue to dominate education news. With millions of dollars of Race to the Top money at stake, the push to raise the New York State charter cap is gaining momentum, thanks to a multimillion-dollar, pro-charter lobby funded by hedge fund managers.
In our last poll we asked you if New York should raise the charter cap. With more than 700 readers weighing in, the majority -- 54% -- voted no, preferring that New York focus its energy and resources on improving traditional public schools.
More than a third of you -- 38% -- supported raising the charter cap. Twenty-three % offered unbridled support for charter schools, because they offer more choice, while 15% supported more charter schools, but not co-locations.
A tiny percentage -- 6% -- need to read the education sections of newspapers and blogs more often, voting "not sure" because they didn't know enough about charter schools.
