Pre-K Round 2 admissions underway
Parents of 4-year-olds still looking for a school for next fall may apply now in the second round of pre-kindergarten admissions. All children who were born in 2006 are eligible for public pre-K, although they are not guaranteed a seat.
Directorieslisting all available schools, including the number of pre-K seats available for morning, afternoon or full-day programs are available online, or you can pick up the booklet at a borough enrollment office. You may apply online or mail in your application. Applications are being accepted from July 19-July 30. You will find out whether your child has been offered a seat at the end of August, late in the process for families still seeking a school!
This year nearly 25,000 families of 4-year-olds applied for pre-kindergarten, up from 20,000 the previous year. Despite the fact thatsome 7,000 children were shut out in the first round of admissions, a quick look at the directory shows that there are open seats in all districts, even some in the most popular schools. Priority in admissions is given to siblings of currently enrolled students, then to those who live in the school's zone and district. And, even if you are enrolled in a pre-K program, in most cases you will have to re-apply for kindergarten.
The directory also lists community organizations, day care centers, and nursery schools that offer public pre-K programs. You must apply to each of those individually; you can download an application or pick one up at the community organizations, known as CBO's. Since most community organizations are open during the summer, it's a good idea to visit and see if it's a suitable place for your child. Call first, because not all have seats available for September.
Families of children who require a special education class should go to their localCommittee on Special Education to apply.
