Letters to families who applied in the second round of pre-kindergarten admissions for this school year will be mailed by the end of this week, according to the Department of Education. An enrollment official said that some were being mailed beginning today.

Families who applied online may access the letter online as well as receiving  a letter mailed home.

UPDATE Sept 1: Most families will receive their placements online on Friday evening, according to a DOE spokesperson. Others will be notified "shortly thereafter."

Roughly 8500 hundred applied for the 6764 open 2nd round seats. There's no way to tell yet how many seats will remain open after this round of admissions. A Daily News article on Monday spotlighted a lack of available seats in popular, crowded Brooklyn schools.

The pre-K registration period begins the first day of school, September 8 and goes through September 17. Families should call schools to set up a time to visit and register.

If you don't get a letter by early next week, call the enrollment office at 718-935-2009.

All children who were born in 2006 are eligible for public pre-K  for the 2010-2011 school year. Last year there was space available in some public school and community organizations even late in October, although many of the openings were for half day programs.

Check the DOE's website for more information, and let us know when you receive your letter!
