Applications for the Specialized High Schools Institute (SHSI), a free course run by the Department of Education that helps economically disadvantaged children prepare for the Specialized High School Admissions Test, are due, Friday, April 9th.

All students admitted will attend five-week intensive summer sessions prior to the start of their 7th and 8th grade years. Students will also get instruction during the school year. More information about the course schedule is available here.

Applications for current public school students

All public schools with a 6th grade received the SHSI applications prior to the spring recess for distribution to eligible students. Applications must be completed and returned to your child's school by April 9.

According to the DOE website, current public school students are eligible to apply to the SHSI, and should have received an application from their current school, if they meet the following criteria:

  • currently in the 6th grade

  • economically disadvantaged, as determined by Title I, free lunch status

  • earned at least a score of 675 on both their 2009 ELA and math 5th grade state exams

  • minimum 90% attendance record in 5th grade.<!--more-->

Applications for current private and parochial students

Private and parochial students who meet the eligibility requirements may also apply. SHSI applications for current private and parochial school 6th graders are also due by Friday, April 9 and must be mailed to Paul Shapiro, SHSI Program Director, Office of Student Enrollment, 52 Chambers Street, Room 415, New York, NY 10007. Non-public school applicants will need to submit proof that they meet the Title I eligibility requirements for free lunch. You can download an application and income eligibility verification form here.
