Success Charters: Coming soon, near you
The Success Charter Network, run by former city councilperson Eva Moskowitz, is setting its sights on three neighborhoods in Brooklyn where it plans to open schools in 2012: Cobble Hill, Williamsburg and Bedford Stuyvesant.
The network already operates nine charter schools, mostly in Harlem and the Bronx in low-income neighborhoods with low-performing schools. This year, amid neighborhood opposition, Moskowitz opened Upper West Success on the Upper West Side, an area known for its good schools. She also opened the first outpost in Brooklyn: Brooklyn Success, in Bedford Stuyvesant which had a long waiting list its first year.
Success Academy Cobble Hill will open in a predominately white, middle class neighborhood with similar demographics to the Upper West Side. People even move to the neighorhood for the schools. Moskowitz told SchoolBook that she expects there will be controversy in Cobble Hill where there is "deep anticharter sentiment." But, she successfully convinced many District 3 parents of the merits of her schools and she expects to do the same in District 15. Over in Williamsburg, apparently, parents reached out the network to open a school. Read more on SchoolBook
