The Department of Education (DOE) officially added three more to the list of new schools opening in September, 2010. Two were approved this week by the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) at its March 24 meeting.

The PEP approved the opening of PS 267 on Manhattan's Upper East Side. We reported back in February, that students zoned for PS 290, PS 183 and PS 59 will get priority admissions to PS 267, which is slated to open in the PS 158 building. According to the latest DOE data, 91 students are wait-listed for 290 and 66 for PS 183. Enrollment data wasn't available for PS 59.

The PEP's vote to open the Eagle Academy for Young Men III(District 29 in Queens) in the IS 59 building has stirred up some controversy. As reported in the Daily News, IS 59 parents are protesting the co-location of the all male , 6 -12 school with a traditional, co-ed middle school.

The DOE also announced the opening of PS 330 in District 24. According to an official from the DOE's Office of Portfolio Enrollment, PS 330 did not require PEP approval because its not co-locating with another school, a circumstance which would trigger the need for  PEP approval.

Two elementary schools are still awaiting final votes by the PEP, scheduled to take place during its April meeting. In District 24, PS. 873 is proposed to open in theI.S. 73 building. In District 3, PS 452 is proposed to open in the IS 44 building.
