Our Insights
The Water's Edge Educational Campus building houses three small schools:
Brooklyn International High School is designed to serve new immigrants and teaches students English while engaging them in creative interdisciplinary projects and a strong arts curriculum. Academic standards are high, and students graduate well prepared for college.
The Urban Assembly High School of Music and Art uses art as a vehicle for students to get more involved in academics. English teachers worked with the art teacher developing a curriculum about comics and graphic novels. The school has a lot going for it: partnerships with the Urban Assembly, a non-profit organization that has a track record for creating successful schools and with the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Science Skills Center High School for Science, Technology and the Creative Arts offers some challenging science classes, but the school has been plagued by poor attendance, declining enrollments and some safety concerns. Most students graduate on time and the percent of students scoring high enough to avoid remediation at CUNY is higher than average for New York City. More than one-third of students at Science Skills said they do not feel safe in the halls or on the property outside the building.(Aryn Bloodworth, December 2012)
