Admission limited to low-income families
A neighborhood institution, Addie Mae Collins Head Start was founded in 1965 and is one of the oldest in the city. Director Diane Spann attended this Head Start herself as a child.
Experienced teachers, lots of trips to zoos and farms, and music lessons make Addie Mae Collins a warm and inviting place where children have both in class and out of class learning, Spann said. Classrooms are in a housing project.
