Our Insights
Little Scholars bills itself as the first "entirely green preschool in New York City." It is a private school with two locations that both have free UPK programs for 4-year-olds.
It offers "farm-fresh" organic meals, according to the website, which has photos of lovely classrooms with wooden furniture and floors, dress-up centers and blocks, and outdoor garden beds [see photo from website].
Little Scholars is accredited by the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children), considered the gold standard in early childhood education. They follow ideas from Reggio-Emilia and the Creative Curriculum.
The program uses wooden toys, soy crayons and "green" cleaning products. Kids do yoga and participate in composting.
ADMISSIONS: Preference to families already in the Little Scholars program, however, when we called in August 2016 there were still a few seats available. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, August 2016)
