The Downside

Poor attendance and low graduation rates

A small high school in downtown Brooklyn that struggled with very low attendance and a poor graduation rate, Freedom Academy High School closed at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. According to Gotham Schools, Freedom Academy received “F” grades on the city progress reports for the two years leading up to its closure.

The Department of Education has no plans to replace Freedom Academy or to renew the city’s lease on the school’s building, which expired in the summer of 2013. (Pauline Zaldonis, August 2013)
