Bushwick United Head Start 1 has eight classrooms and accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a sign of high quality.
Classrooms are organized into areas of learning, called “centers,” filled with puzzles, blocks, sand and water play, and a dress-up corner where kids tell stories in preparation for writing stories. The website shows children poring over subway maps, singing to guitar music, and building with blocks and Lincoln Logs. [photo from Bushwick United website]
Children take trips, such as to the Museum of Natural History, the NYC Transit Museum and the Hayden Planetarium, among many other destinations listed on the website. They visit local bakeries, fire stations and dentist offices.
Head Start Centers, part of the 50-year-old federal anti-poverty program, give priority to low-income families. The hours tend to be longer than an ordinary public school but shorter than child-care centers. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, January 2018)
