A small school in Washington Heights, Community Math and Science Prep, also known as MS 328, serves many children who are still learning English, including newcomers from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Haiti, Guyana, and Yemen.
The school has a dual language program designed to make students fluent in both Spanish and English. Children who speak other languages, including Arabic, receive instruction in English as a New Language, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). Students come from Harlem and the Bronx as well as from the immediate neighborhood.
The school offers a wide range special education services, including team-taught classes, small “self-contained” classes,” counseling, assistive technology, adaptive physical education and occupational and physical therapy, according to the CEP.
MS 328, opened in 2004, was one of two small schools that replaced IS 164, which was closed for poor performance.
