The Downside
Low academic standards, poor attendance.
J.H.S 117 was closed by the Department of Education in 2010 due to consistently poor performance, low academic achievement and persistent student behavior issues. Several principals, including Major Fareed, Chris Aguirre, and Ralph Martinez, dealt with the school's problems with limited success in the years leading up to its closing. In 2008 no new 6th graders were admitted and in 2010 the last class of 8th graders graduated.
The building, Tito Puente Educational Complex, is home to two schools: Esperanza Preparatory Academy, a 6-12 school, and the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars (TAG), a K-8 citywide gifted school. (Kaia Tien, web reports, 2016)
