Our Insights

IS 206 is a tiny, safe middle school in University Heights. Good Shepherd Services run an after school program that includes a meal, athletics, the arts, leadership activities, and academics until 5:30 pm, according to the middle school directory.

Originally set up in an open-classroom arrangement, the school later built walls, a conversion that left it with some of the smallest classrooms in any New York City school.

Teachers participate in the Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI) to boost reading and writing. Students read, discuss, debate and write about a weekly topic using vocabulary words that teachers reinforce in all classes, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan.

Families are invited to special events, such as the winter classical music concert, family movie night, and science night. A monthly family breakfast celebrates high-achievers.

Admissions: Zoned neighborhood school. (May 2019)
