The Downside
Poor attendance and academic performance
Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy (BETA), which shares the John F. Kennedy Campus with other small schools, began as a program affiliated with Manhattan College's School of Engineering. All students are expected to complete four years of math, technology/engineering, and science. There are classes in computer science and engineering.
Unfortunately, most students enter with poor academic skills. Attendance is poor and the graduation rate is below the citywide average.
Admissions: Students are admitted according to Educational Option formula designed to ensure a mix of low- and high-achieving students. Priority goes to students who attend an open house and submit a writing exercise onsite. (Saba Sebhatu, web reports and DOE data, October 2018)
